War of HD Media Carrier - Blu Ray Won
I was out of tech-touch for a bit and was up for a real surprise. A friend of mine was asking for help, and I promised him to shop for a replacement for his old DVD player. He is an avid movie collector. I was looking for HD DVD and Blu Ray. The sales dude informed that not long ago that Toshiba threw in the towel and pull out from HD DVD development & manucfacturing.
Without going much into the
details in comparing the two, HD DVD is cheaper and more associateable
name - a potential winning formula. But it didnt. I don't know how many
of you know and remember HDCD. A very similar fate. Toshiba recently
held a press conference stating that it will reduce manufacturing HD
DVD player, all retail store scrambled to cut the losses - $10 HD DVD
movies titles a highlight feature in their latest brochure.
So
Blu Ray is the one left to be the main stream HD media carrier format.
So what is Blu Ray?. It is developed by Sony. To make it easier for
those who are non-tech savvy. Blu Ray disc has more than 5 time
capacity than an original DVD movie disc. That enables it to carry more
data of clarity and fun in one disc. Blu Ray uses blue laser, which has
shorter wavelength than the red, therefore it is more data in one line
than of the red. Blu Ray has the true HD of 1080 capability whilst a
very classy DVD can go up to 768 (very good quality).
So if
you are hunting for a new plasma or LCD TV, and wondering what the heck
is that sticker with 1080p or 1080i for, the asnwer (for now) is Blu
Ray. TV station would not be able to transmit full HD as yet, because
of the highb andwith although in the US some channels have already sold
their channel Full HD.
No the current DVD player cannot play Blu Ray Disc. And Blu Ray disc is quite expensive at the moment, but for a Full HD fan it is like it's ok to go to a fine restaurant because of the good food you will get. If you are worry about shortage of movies, there are currently movie giants like Disney, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount (bailed out on HD DVD), Sony (surpise!)and Warner continually to dedicate their new release in Blu Ray format.
