WTF? Mamak Wannabes in Sydney?!
There are good chances to come across some try-hard-wannabes. To lots of Malaysians, and for you Aussies, we loathe - and I stress WE LOATHE - those Asians who (Indian, Chinese Malay, whoever) try to put up UK's, OZ's & worst of all Yank's accent. No. They don't normally crossed the line sounded like Tony Blair or Guliani or Alan Jones. Instead they sounded phoney with laughable attitude. That phoney accent which usually & magically came together with their foreign University degree - yes! a former foreign student back to the homesoil. For us, it turns out like a f****g sour awful beancurd.
There are only a handful Malaysians
get away with bearable foreign accent - it is like music to our ears.
Siti singing as opposed to Will Hung says it all. They are The Fly Guy
with a palpable Yank accent (he needs another hipped radio to be opened
just like a new hang out joint - the old one gets daggy), Yasmin Yusuf
with a mild Pommie accent and... that's it. But that was 2001. These
people use their ability to speak like Kuai Lou to earn a living and
not only that - they are full of wit and they are good at it hence they
got paid - lah.
Right. I am a bit mean here. Who wanna be Mamak wannabes? Why would they? Because it's $$$$ lucrative for F**K sake! Look at this bunch, seize every bloody opportunity, $6 roti telur (eggy bread) leading the charge, they opened up a stall offering mamak delicacies, take a good look at how much they are selling. In Chinatown!!!. By the end of the night, "Soli Sol out ah!" when I tried to get my hands on the satay. That was $10 for 12 sticks.
In Malaysia, for me at least, it is like stumbling on Mamak selling Hainan Chicken Rice or Stir Fried Rice or even Peking Duck. It's odd. This is tantamount to that shocka! But well done guys, someone has to do it. Perhaps setup a mamak stall in SS14 (an area renown for "genuine" mamak) next time? Fuse it with Hor fun Roti?
So next time think twice before poaching my site with ads on the comment (check out the comment on previous Roti Canai article)... Make sure your roti is well tossed and Milo Peng Kurhang Manih!
Long live Mamak!!!!!!!!!
